Hugh Chittenden - Personal Profile

Hugh has been photographing birds for over 40 years, starting with slide film in the 1970’s. His interest in birdlife, and love of bird photography has taken him not most corners of southern Africa and has travelled to many other destinations on the African continent and elsewhere.

His publications include ‘Top Birding Spots in southern Africa (1992), Roberts Bird Guide,  first edition (2007), Roberts Bird Guide – Kruger National Park (2009), Roberts Geographic Variation of southern African Birds (2012) and  Roberts Bird Guide, second edition (2016).

Hugh received an honorary doctorate for contributions to ornithology in 2012. Hugh is also current chairman of the John Voelcker Bird Book Fund, a non-profit organisation that sees to the perpetuation of Roberts bird book publications.

He currently resides in the town of Mtunzini on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
